The FLAT microfestival is a friend-organised, participatory art program based in a private flat made public for the duration of the event. This first iteration takes place on the 26th and 27th of October, at Kääpiöidenpolku 4 B 54. A dwelling is a tool, so we ask what one can do within their particular socio-economic context, what can be suggested, shared, and opened up? FLAT is the space; FLAT is the structure. Participants are also the viewers, hierarchies from elsewhere should fade: we are all guests-hosts-inhabitants.

This particular flat is: Student accommodation owned by AYY, lived in by a couple, in the second year of renting (last year here), costing 740 Euros per month without bills, located next to a school and an elderly care home. An old pony lives by the care home. Roihuvuoren is a fairly recently developed area that is still to be completely gentrified. It is next to Itakeskus, an area with a gigantic shopping mall and second-hand shop conglomerate, and a culturally diverse local population.

The FLAT has 4 corners: Food, Furniture, Home Cinema, Reading Before Bed. Food is the memory of singed taste buds and friendship’s path through the stomach. Furniture is the totality of objects and artworks taking place in the flat. Home Cinema is the sharing of a familial moment with the risk of mischosen entertainment. Reading Before Bed is a blanket of words by a warm, yellow bedside lamp.
